Three Letter Plague by Jonny Steinberg

At the end of a steep gravel road in one of the remotest corners of Lusikisiki in the old Transkei lies the village of Ithanga. Home to a few hundred villagers, the majority of them unemployed, it is inconceivably poor. In the broader world, most would consider it entirely inconsequential.

It is to here that award-winning author Jonny Steinberg travels to explore the lives of a community caught up in a battle to survive the ravages of HIV/Aids. He befriends Sizwe, a young local man who runs a spaza shop who refuses to be tested for Aids despite the existence of a well-run testing and anti-retroviral programme. It is this apparent illogic that becomes the key to understanding the dynamics that thread their way through a complex and traditional rural community.

As Steinberg grapples to get closer to finding answers that remain maddeningly just out of reach, he realizes that he must look within himself to unravel certain riddles.

Following on from the huge critical success of Midlands and The Number, both of which won the Alan Paton Award, Steinberg has written another masterpiece which will be simultaneously released in the United States and South Africa.

When Hungry, Eat by Joanne Fedler

When Joanne Fedler sees a photograph of herself on the beach at her son's 5thbirthday party, the shock sends her running to 'The Food Fascist'... the dietician from hell.

As a new immigrant in Australia, and mother of two, she only knows that she does not want to be 'fat and forty.' What begins as a strict eating regime takes her on a journey of discovery not only into the many meanings of hunger, but also into the consequences of loss.

As Joanne slowly sheds her weight, gram by gram, she starts to confront the grief of having left the feast of her life in South Africa, her beloved homeland. In making friends with hunger and dropping a few dress sizes, Joanne learns to confront her fear of being hungry, of letting go, of losing things. In this way, a quest for weight loss becomes a pilgrimage of faith, love, memory and acceptance.

The Elephant Whisperer

Learning About Life, Loyalty and Freedom From a Remarkable Herd of Elephants by Lawrence Anthony

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of 'rogue' elephants on his reserve at Thula Thula, his commonsense told him to refuse.

But he was the herd's last chance of survival - notorious escape artists, they would all be killed if Lawrence wouldn't take them.

He agreed, but before arrangements for the move could be completed the animals broke out again and the matriarch and her baby were shot.

The remaining elephants were traumatised and very angry.

As soon as they arrived at Thula Thula they started planning their escape...As Lawrence battled to create a bond with the elephants and save them from execution, he came to realise that they had a lot to teach him about love, loyalty and freedom.

Set against the background of life on the reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, this is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers everywhere.

Around Madagascar on a Kayak

In July 2009 Riaan set another world first when he became the first person to circumnavigate the world's fourth largest island of Madagascar by kayak; another expedition achieved alone and unaided.

This incredible journey, 5000 kms in eleven months, was considerably more demanding, both physically and mentally. Daily, Riaan had to conquer extreme loneliness whilst ploughing through treacherous conditions such as cyclones, pounding surf and an unrelenting sun that, combined with up to ten hours in salt water, was literally pickling his body.

The perseverance, of course, brought memorable close encounters with Madagascar's marine life - humpback whales breaching meters away from his kayak, giant leatherback turtles gliding alongside him and even having his boat rammed by sharks.

Riaan travelled around Madagascar during a period of the country's most significant political turmoil, which gave him unrivalled insight into the exotic island's psyche and even earned him two nights in prison on suspicion of carrying out mercenary activities.

Around Madagascar in my Kayak will be packed with engaging stories and beautiful photographs and is set to become another best-seller.

Taking the Mickey by Mickey Arthur

Mickey Arthur was one of SA's longest-serving and most successful coaches. In 2008, along with the national team, he created history when the Proteas beat both England and Australia on their own turf. Beating Pakistan away from home the year before, set in motion an unprecedented journey to the number one ranking in both ODI and Test cricket.

Since the world ranking system was introduced to international cricket, Australia has been the only other team to achieve this feat.

In 12 tours 'down under' spanning almost a century, South Africa has never managed to win a Test series in Australia. But Arthur, captain Graeme Smith and the rest of the team overcame incredible odds to chase a total of over 400 in the first Test in Perth.

They faced what seemed certain defeat in Melbourne to win again and take an unbeatable 2-0 series lead. South Africa became the top ranked team in test cricket, finally unseating the mighty Australians who dominated for years. Soon after, they repeated this feat when they became the top ranked ODI team.

Big Dan's Sofie

Big Dan's Sofie is a poignant tale of family and compassion against the setting of the woodcutter's lives in the Knysna forest. It tells the story of Sofie, a woman born into abject poverty with no prospect of marriage.

The story takes place during the period 1935 to 1945 when Sofie goes to work for Big Dan, a forester whose wife is terminally ill. She takes care of his neglected children and raises her own level of education while helping them with their homework.

After his wife dies, Big Dan finds himself increasingly drawn to Sofie and her tender yet straightforward ways.

Eventually they fall in love and get married. Despite her simple background, Sofie manages to draw a deeply complicated family together with wisdom and understanding beyond her upbringing.

She tackles the prejudices of her fellow villagers with veracity and brutal honesty, and constantly demonstrates that grace and wisdom are the products of character and not social standing.

Deeper Than Colour by James Clelland

WINNER OF THE 2009/10 EUROPEAN UNION LITERARY AWARD

Thematically, Deeper than Colour explores the wide gulf between our view of ourselves, how we are seen by others, and the dispassionate images seen through the cold lens of a camera.

Angus has been traumatised by his time on the Border and now begins to film himself doing ordinary things, to try to understand his life. It is impossible, he says, for an abnormal person to have a normal life in an abnormal city like Johannesburg.

The effect of the Border War on young white males has received little attention from novelists. Many troubled people are roaming our deeply divided country.

It is these circumstances of present and remembered trauma that became the melting pot from which Deeper than Colour emerges.

Coming this December 2010.

The Hairdresser of Harare by Tendai Hunchu

In a country where homosexuals are condemned by their president as being 'lower than pigs and dogs, where one could be prosecuted and imprisoned for committing 'homosexual acts', comes a story of a young man forced to lead a shadow of a life to avoid the harsh consequences of living openly.

Vimbai, the self proclaimed number one hairdresser in Harare is livid with jealousy when the good looking, smooth-talking Dumisani joins the esteemed Mrs Khumalo's Hair Salon and snatches the number one spot. Against her better judgement Vimbai soon falls under his infectious charm not knowing that Dumisani holds a shocking secret, one that will turn her views of the world upside-down. The Hairdresser of Hararecatapults us into the world of Zimbabwe’s elite society, where stereotypes and prejudices are as abundant as the lavishness. It tactfully tackles the issue of homosexuality that most African literature shies away from.

Like very good dark chocolate, this is a delicious novel with a bitter-sweet flavour. Written with delightful humour and a penetrating eye, this is a novel that will touch and tickle you in equal measure.

Babylons Ark - Lawrence Anthony

When the Iraq war began, conservationist Lawrence Anthony could think of only one thing: the fate of the Baghdad Zoo, located in the city centre and caught in the war's crossfire.

Once Anthony entered Baghdad he discovered that full-scale combat and uncontrolled looting had killed nearly all the animals of the zoo.

But not all of them. U.S. soldiers had taken the time to help care for the remaining animals, and the zoo's staff had returned to work in spite of the constant fire fights.

Together the Americans and Iraqis managed to keep alive the animals that had survived the invasion."Babylon's Ark" chronicles the zoo's transformation from bombed-out rubble to peaceful park.

Along the way, Anthony recounts hair-raising efforts to save a pride of the dictator's lions, close a deplorable black-market zoo, and rescue Saddam's Arabian horses.

His unique ground-level experience makes "Babylon's Ark" an uplifting story of both sides working together for the sake of innocent animals caught in the war's crossfire.

The Elephants and I

An unplanned visit to South Africa's Kruger National Park changed Sharon Pincott's life as she knew it.

She was a high-flying Information Technology specialist Down Under, but now she dreamed of working with Africa's wildlife. Eventually, she abandoned her life of privilege and luxury and moved to Zimbabwe - a country in turmoil - to live and work among elephants on land bordering Hwange National Park.

It was a startling contrast to her former life. In time, Sharon formed extraordinary relationships with wild elephants, having learned to know them intimately. She treasured escapades with friends, both human and animal, in spectacular remote places.

But, as she soon discovered first-hand, the beauty and wonder of wild Zimbabwe had a dark foreboding side.

Snaring of wildlife was rife, and when land invaders claimed the area where Sharon's elephant friends roamed, she went into battle for their land and their lives - while fighting for her own wellbeing, in her homeland of choice.

This is an inspirational true story filled with unrivalled splendour, joy and hope - but sure enough in today's Zimbabwe, this precious beauty is frequently shattered by heartbreaking despair.

"Sharon Pincott has written a memoir worthy of her elephant friends. A very moving story." - Gareth Patterson, international best-selling author of Last of the Free

Eggs to Lay, Chickes to Hatch

Agnes, the Van Wyks' Zulu domestic worker, had a special friendship with young Chris in the late sixties to early seventies.

He would defend her whenever she came to work with a hangover on a Monday morning and made a mess of the cleaning. In turn, Agnes never told on Chris when he played truant from school.

As the years passed, the two grew closer, swopping stories about coloureds and Zulus, life in Riverlea and Soweto, pass laws, politics and falling in love.

She taught him to count in Zulu and he promised to teach her to read in English. Whenever the clock ran against her, Agnes would stop almost in mid-sentence, grab a broom or cloth, and declare. 'I have to rush. I have eggs to lay, chickens to hatch. 'What an odd, ungrammatical thing to say, Chris often mused.

But many years later, he played a CD by Louis Jordan, a 1940s American jazz singer, and it all became clear.

Eggs to lay, chickens to hatch is Chris van Wyk's second childhood memoir about growing up in Riverlea and his colourful interactions with the men and women who lived the African proverb that 'it takes a village to raise a child'.

But mostly it is the story of a wonderful friendship between a young coloured boy and a Zulu woman.

Shirly Goodness and Mercy

Despite Van Wyk's later becoming involved in the anti-apartheid 'struggle', this is not a book about racial politics.

Instead, it is a delightful account of one boy's special relationship with the relatives, friends and neighbours - often decidedly quirky - who made up his community, and of the important coping role laughter and humour played during the years he spent in bleak, dusty townships.

In "Shirley, Goodness & Mercy", Chris van Wyk has created a truly remarkable record of life in the Coloured community at once both informative and vastly entertaining.

"A lovely book; well told and beautifully executed." - "Cape Times."

"Well worth waiting for, this is a memoir not to miss." - "Sunday Independent."

"Van Wyk's strength is to look at the world as if with the innocent eyes of a child and to convey this hopeful vision to other." - "Sowetan."

"An authentic and important contribution to South African literature; it is also an entertaining social document of a specific community." - "Mail and Guardian."

The Fear by Peter Godwin

In mid-2008, after thirty years of increasingly tyrannical rule, Robert Mugabe, the 84-year-old ruler of Zimbabwe, met with his politburo.

He had just lost an election. But instead of conceding power, Mugabe was persuaded to launch a brutal campaign of terror to cower Zimbabwe's citizens.

Journalist and author Peter Godwin was one of a few observers to slip into the country and bear witness to the terrifying period that Zimbabweans call simply, The Fear.

Following on from his compelling and moving memoirs Mukiwa. Told with Godwin's brilliant eye for character and natural story-telling gifts, this dark story of Africa's corruption and violence is populated by extraordinary characters whose lives have been shaped by The Fear.

Blind Faith - Barbara Folscher

In North Oxford, where South African born Elena has been living for the past seven years, the morning paper brings shocking news about allegations made at the Truth Commission in South Africa and a criminal case against Dr Leonard Bresler, the anaesthetist (22 Med Corps) who bought her Debussy painting and made it possible for her to live in England.

In addition, the newspaper mentions an ex-prisoner of Robben Island who gave evidence at the TRC. Could that be Vulani? And could the stranger who came to her friends Nina and Jacques in Cape Town to enquire after her, really have been Vulani?

Elena relives the time seven years previously, in the turbulent South Africa of 1989, when she found an escaped prisoner on the beach in front of her house in Cape Town during the last months of the apartheid government's rule in South Africa.

They undertook a journey together that would challenge everything that had formed Elena: her understanding of her own identity, her relationship with her father, her work as an artist.

The slow burn of the relationship between two people from opposite worlds is at the heart of the novel. An intelligent and enjoyable political thriller with strong psychological undertones.

Eminently readable.

Headline Murders : Slayings which took South Africa

Headline Murders is a collection of stories about ten of South Africa's most notorious murder cases.

The death of former First Lady Marike de Klerk spawned rumours of a political killing and dissension in the family; the story of Casper Greeff, respected dentist and dedicated husband found guilty of paying to have his lovely wife murdered, is one steeped in envy and intrigue; the Bain's Kloof murder is an unsettling account of how poverty and abuse conspired to create human killing machines.

These and seven other alarming real-life tales of murder that shocked South Africa are retold with gritty details that were unknown at the time when they made headlines. With photographs of killers and victims.

The stories lend a human face to people, victims and perpetrators, who in a time of violent crime often become mere statistics.

Apetown - Sven Eick

Lars thinks he's found a foolproof, virtually legal plan to earn money from pool clubs without having to do much work.

But what starts out as a simple plan soon puts him on the wrong side of Costas, a Greek club owner whose wrong side you just don't want to be on, and a man who happens to have a special plan of his own.

Hampered by a single digit bank balance, an unpronounceable name and a habitually dysfunctional and distant family, Lars must now rely on his friends.

Frankie (an ex-SADF soldier with homicidal tendencies), Croccy (a dope-addled Australian who hasn't taken his shoes of since he was eighteen) and Marvin (an itinerant barman who rarely gets out of bed) to help him out of the mess.

With time running out, Lars sets out to appease Costas. To succeed he'll need Croccy to keep his boots on, Marvin to stay sober and Frankie to avoid killing anyone unless it's absolutely neccessary.

And if Lars survives, he may finally convince his on-off girlfriend Nadine to abandon her attempts to drag him kicking and screaming up the slopes of Cape Town's class pyramid.

Addressing the timeless themes of love, betrayal, death, and incurable stupidity, Apetown will take you on an edgy, unforgettable romp through the clubs, back-streets and intricate social tangles of a modern South African postcard paradise.

Behind the Curtain : A Journey to Sobriety

This is a well-written, poignant memoir of a woman's unhappy childhood and a brave and gripping account of her triumph over alcoholism.

The details of Jean's personal anguish and the obvious authenticity of her report on a life very nearly gone amiss demonstrate the kind of clout that only an honest personal account can have.

The frank way the book addresses the sensitive issues of alcoholism and domestic violence, and the vivid recall and dramatic impact with which some scenes are described, make this a powerful testament.

Both inspirational and informative, also about the role the AA played in her life once she admitted she had a problem.

The author stopped drinking 28 years ago and after achieving sobriety her career flourished and she opened her own business in 1985. She is now in her seventies and semi-retired, and has grandchildren who regard her as a "cool gran", something that would not have been possible if she hadn't stopped drinking.
