Getaway 21 Years of African Travel Writing

This wonderful collection of travel writing captures the very best of Getaway's articles over the past 21 years of travel, exploration and adventure.

It's a celebration of the diversity of the continent and of the journalists that write about it: from the founding editor, David Steele, to the unforgettable Patrick Wagner; the pens of David Bristow and Don Pinnock; the new guard lead by Justin Fox and Cameron Ewart-Smith; and the journalists who have worked alongside them to offer the readers new insights into the African way of life.

From personal accounts of the journeys and their destinations to uncovering the world and the environment in which we live, this book is a superb showcase of the writing that has made Getaway the leading travel magazine in Southern Africa.

African Lens - 20 Years of Getaway Photograph

Twenty years of remarkable Getaway photography has culminated in the vivid photographic passport to Africa that is Africa Lens.

Over the past two decades Getaway has excited the armchair traveller andinspired the adventurous to explore thecontinent. More than any other publication,it has captured the spirit of Africantravel and adventure, reaching millions of readers. The magazine has portrayed the continent's people, fauna and landscapes in many indelible ways over the past 20 years.

As with good travel writing, a successful photographic assignment is one in which the journalist has captured the genius loci the spirit of the place. It's often an indescribable and elusive element: a mood, a familiar scene rendered somehow unfamiliar, perhaps a fleeting moment where light and subject conspire in the viewfinder to give you something... more.

The pictures reproduced in this book are just such moments.

African Trek : In the Footsteps of Mankind

From the Cape of Good Hope to Mount Kilimanjaro.

Relentless sun, wild animal attacks, crossing countries in crisis...

Three years, eleven countries, 1,200 families, 14,000 kilometers of adventures while walking in the footsteps of mankind through the Cradle of Life.

Remarkable French couple, Alexandre and Sonia Poussin, embarked on a rare and epic journey through Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Sea of Galilee entirely on foot. In a three-year trek along the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, their goal was to symbolically retrace the passage of early Man, from Australopithecus to Modern Man. Without sponsors, without a support team and sharing in the poverty of their hosts, the Poussins tell us of the enthusiastic generosity of their African counterparts as they partake in an unfamiliar, yet warmer way of life.

"To say that reading Africa Trek is [an] inspirational story is an understatement. It is an experience, reminding us [of] the importance of slow travel to truly discover the essence of culture, environment and ourselves." - Anna, WEND Magazine

Hyena Nights and Kalahari Days

Hyenas have a bad reputation and are misunderstood by most people. Until recent years many wildlife publications used words like freak, stupid, demented and ungainly to describe hyenas, but in this book Gus and Margie Mills allow the reader to see these intriguing animals for what they really are: intelligent, powerful, even beautiful.

Gus and Margie Mills, newly married, trekked to the Kalahari to spend two years studying the little-known brown hyena. They were so enchanted by these captivating animals that they ended up stayed for 12 years and uncovered a treasure trove of facts about the lives of both brown and spotted hyenas.

Their studies allowed them to get to know the hyena clans and their hierarchies intimately and became privy to events which only a handful of people have ever had the privilege to witness. By studying the complex relationship between these predators and their prey they have been able to separate the myths from the reality. In so doing, they have uncovered the significance of hyena behaviour within the larger sphere of the Kalahari ecosystem. The greatest risk to hyenas has always been the Kalahari land-owners and wildlife managers. The Mills’ research has vastly improved this often tenuous relationship, allowing man and carnivore to more peacefully co-exist.

While Gus tells the story of their endlessly fascinating research in the first half of the book, Margie fills in the details of the daily challenges of living in this remote area in the second half. Not only did they have to contend with the isolation of their Kalahari camp, 420 kilometres from the nearest town, but also with the challenges of raising their children in this semi-desert thirstland. Unencumbered by modern conveniences like air conditioners during the searing heat of summer, and heaters during the bitter chill of winter, Margie lays out both the problems and the pleasures of a life lived in this stark wilderness.

Roberts Voelgids

The John Voelcker Bird Book Fund is proud to publish this guide, which complements the large handbook tome Roberts Birds of Southern Africa VII.

This is the first regional field guide on the continent of Africa to display multi-coloured distribution maps. The breeding bards that are conveniently placed below the distribution maps show the full breeding season, and peak breeding for all species. This is the first comprehensive field guide in southern Africa that gives information on food and breeding strategies. Included, too, are the meaning of scientific names (Etymology) and colloquial names in 13 languages.

This information, together with 166 annotated plates illustrated by seven of southern Africa's finest bird artists, makes this guide essential for both beginners and experts in the field of ornithology.

Beat about the Bush : Birds

The Beat about the Bush series answers all those everyday questions that are prompted by visits to the bush. It fills the gap in exisiting literature and field guides alike, complemented by more than 900 full-colour photographs.

Although details are given on bird identification and all the bird groups of southern Africa are covered in a very informative 'Did you know' section, this work can more appropriately be described as a behavioural guide. It delves into the fascinating lives of birds - discussing in detail thier myriad forms, survival strategies, breeding and feeding behaviours, movements, migration and vocalisations.

The result is a comprehensive reference work in a style that appeals to novices, birders, twitchers, tourists, bush enthusiasts and field guides alike.

Beat about the bush : Mammals

Mammals are the animals that most people come to wilderness areas to see. They range in size from the pygmy shrew (2g) to the blue whale (120 tonnes). But what makes a mammal a mammal - indeed why is the blue whale not a fish?

How does the elephant's trunk work?

Why do many mammals have coat patterns?

This book follows in the footsteps of its immensely popular predecessor, Beat About the Bush: Mammals & Birds. This expanded version has, however, been revised to cover mammals in a much more comprehensive manner with updated classifications, new questions and answers, a more user-friendly format and more than 600 full-colour photographs. The section on tracks and signs is superbly illustrated to make this intimidating and confusing subject easy to grasp.

The overall result is a field companion that still manages to answer all those everyday questions about mammals in a style that appeals to tourists, bush enthusiasts and field guides alike, by presenting the fundamentals of our wildlife in a detailed, yet easily understandable fashion.

Trevor is currently developing the Beat About the Bush concept into a series including mammals, birds, insects & plants and amphibians & reptiles.

The Coastal Guide of South Africa

The Coastal Guide of South Africa will take you on a magical journey along South Africa's coastline while exploring the beauties and hidden secrets of our natural heritage.

The 3 000km stretch of coastline in South Africa has contrasting climates and habitats that in turn accommodate an enormously rich and diverse array of plants and animals. The west coast has cold, nutrient-rich waters, kelp forests and low-growing, succulent scrub along the dunes, while on the east and north coasts conditions are more tropical with higher rainfall, warmer waters, greater marine diversity and tall, dense coastal forests.

The Coastal Guide of South Africa is a basic guide to our coastline's biodiversity, from dune to ocean, developed in order to offer beach enthusiasts, holidaymakers and recreational anglers a simple guide for identifying the plants and animals most frequently or commonly seen or caught along South Africa's coastline. Although it does not cover all the species, it is a good introduction for those people who would like to begin to identify and understand some of the coastal life we come into contact with while using the beach.

We also hope that this guide will create an awareness and appreciation of the diverse and contrasting biodiversity found on our rich and beautiful coast, including background information on tides, habitats and coastlines.

The Coastal Guide of South Africa (also available in Afrikaans) is a new addition to Jacana's eco-guide series. Each of these guides explores a specific area in South Africa, namely the Garden Route, Gauteng, Lowveld & Kruger and Pilanesberg.

Back Roads of the Cape

Back Roads of the Cape is not a travel guide with lists of hotels and restaurants. Instead, the pages are taken up with historical narratives, personal recollections, reflections on politics, environmental debates, social observation and some practical travel information. The rest is left up to the traveller to organise. Resources for further information are listed in the back of the book.

Since Back Roads was not written to satisfy any specific sponsor, the book is able to be honest and unbiased in the subjects that it covers.

It is not obligated to omit, or to be nice to, certain establishments, so the text is opinionated and robust. The book is also an attempt to modernise the rather old-fashioned genre of travel writing with an idiosyncratic writing style and a sense of humour.

It also aims to share a flavour of the travel experience with the reader and, hopefully, show them a little of the adventure that lies in wait outside the living room.

"Ideally, I would like people who have read the guide to feel like they were in the car with me," says David.
