Unequivocally, a must-read if you enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale. Margaret Atwood wrote this sequel separately from the hit TV series spawned by the first book. So, don't expect to just pick up on Offred's story. However, I appreciate this as it almost creates a stand-alone "world" in the books themselves. While the new characters we're introduced to aren't as nuanced as those we met in The Handmaid's Tale, the reader is drawn into their fates. The underlying societal commentary isn't as sharp as The Handmaid's Tale, but the themes continue to flow through. In my view, it's the plot that draws you in on this one ... and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Sequels will usually not be as good as their predecessors, hence just 3 stars. But if you're a die-hard Atwood fan, you can't miss this one.
