I found this book quite a difficult read and felt the story was interesting but a little ponderous at times. It is the story of a man's search for the history of his family through a collection of Japanese netsuke (tiny carved figurines that were originally used to keep a coin purse tightly closed). It is the tale of the author's family, the society within which the family moved, art, two world wars, art, familial devotion, wealth, and antisemitism. This ide range of subjects becomes heavy going at times and more than once I felt that I had to put the book down and then came back to it. I believe that it is a book worth reading and there is a lot of good stuff in it, just be prepared for a long read that requires concentration.
