Book by Chris Smith, inspired by Enid Blyton

The forgotten treasure.

When Tom, Fran, Maddy, and their dog Gilbert arrive in Kirrin to spend the holidays with their cousin, Professor George, they're met with a surprisingly cold welcome. But things take a mysterious turn that very night when a strange man sneaks into George’s study carrying a wooden bat, the adventure really begins!

What I thought:

This book follows three children and their dog as they stay with their cousin George, who is now a professor. Although the group receives a strange welcome at first, they eventually settle in. But later that night, while George is asleep in her study, someone unexpectedly enters, and it’s not one of the children. It’s a man… and he’s holding a wooden bat.

The plot was exciting and full of twists, with some fresh new characters while still capturing the thrill and mystery of the original Famous Five stories. I especially loved the references to familiar people and places from the original series! They made me smile, since I’ve read the whole series!

This book stands well on its own, so you don’t need to have read the original Famous Five books by Enid Blyton to enjoy it—but I highly recommend reading them anyway! The Famous Five is definitely my favourite book series. I would rate this book a 10/10!
