In Januarie 1903 word John Buchan, een van Milner se Kindergarten-groep, ontbied na 'n vergadering wat saam met lord Milner en die besoekende Britse Minister van Buitelandse Sake, Joseph Chamberlain, in Johannesburg plaasvind.

Hy word ingelig dat baie van die goud wat as gevolg van die naderende Britse troepe deur die Transvaalse regering by die Staatsmunt verwyder is, steeds in die land is. 'n Leidraad oor waar hierdie goud is, naamlik 'n veldpond, is by Pelgrimsrus gevind.

Chamberlain se opdrag aan Buchan is om die goud - wat almal “Kruger se Goud” noem - op te spoor.

Buchan vertrek onverwyld per trein en per perd Pelgrimsrus toe, oor die pragtige berge, deur die woude en verby die watervalle van die Oos-Transvaal.

Die verhaal wat volg, is een van gevaar, bedrog en avontuur, wat alles onder streng geheimhouding plaasvind. Dit is boeiend en spanningsvol - tot op die einde.
