About Die Vrywilligers By Malene Breytenbach

Met die uitbreek van die Boereoorlog besluit dokter Robert Campbell en sy aptekersvriend, Thomas Fraser, om 'n ambulans na die gevegsfront te stuur. Die vrywillige verpleegsters is Robert en Thomas se dogters, Eleanor en Mary, en die Campbells se buurdogter, Martha. Martha se ouer broer, Jakkie, gaan ook saam om by die Pretoria Kommando aan te sluit.

Van al die vrywilligers het slegs die sestienjarige Eleanor mediese ondervinding aangesien haar ma 'n vroedvrou is en sy soms assisteer. Dokter Campbell se seun, Rory, studeer medies in Edinburgh maar onderbreek sy studies om by die ambulans aan te sluit. Gedurende sy reis terug ontmoet hy drie Russe wat aan die Boerekant kom veg en hulle raak vriende. Een van hulle is luitenant Ivan Mikhailov van Sint Petersburg.

Die Fraser & Campbell-ambulans reis per trein na die Natalse gevegsfront om by die ander ambulanse aan te sluit naby Ladysmith, waar hulle die Pretorius-tweeling ontmoet. Maar die Boere ly 'n groot nederlaag by die Slag van Elandslaagte en die gruwels van die oorlog laat Eleanor se geloof wankel. Hoe kan God soveel ellende toelaat? Tydens die geveg word Ivan gewond en Eleanor help om hom te verpleeg.
